Mascaras and Eyeliners

If you thought I had a lot of products inside my make up bag just for getting the perfect face, here comes the fun part: eye make up. You wont believe the amount of time Miss Universe contestants spend doing eye make up. You know how they say the eyes are the window to the soul and honestly, nothing makes the eyes stand out more than smokey eyes and kohl rimmed eyes. Here are just a few of the tools behind those piercing eyes. We start with mascara.

Maybelline Define-a-Lash Volume Mascara: The sister to my holy grail of mascaras. This mascara gives volume to your lashes and shares the same properties as its sister mascara holding your lashes perfectly curled and prettily separated.
Maybelline Define-a-Lash Lengthening Mascara: I have a whole stash of this mascara in my make up drawer because you cant find it here in Singapore. I dont know how many tubes I’ve gone through but I never ever complete my make up routine without this mascara.
Majolica Majorca Lash Wing Gorgeous: With them fibre bits in its formula, I expected a lot more from this mascara to get them wing-like lashes. But I find it doesnt compare to Imju Fibrewig’s Mascara although you can use it on the tips of your lashes for a wee bit more length.

And then there are the various eyeliners to define the eyes.

MAC Eye Kohl: Intense pencil eyeliner that smudges for that partied-all-night look.
Kate Super Sharp Liner: As the name suggests, this flexible felt-tip eyeliner is super sharp and I love it for its precision and ability to give that perfect wing on the outer corners.
tokidoki Perfetto Eyeliner: This felt-tip eyeliner has played hide and seek with me countless times. But now that I’ve finally managed to catch a hold of it, I brought it to Sao Paulo
Kate Gel Eyeliner: My alternative to liquid liners because of its slightly softer effect.
Kate Pencil Eyeliner: Because I’m so used to gel eyeliners and liquid eyeliners now, this to me is like a baby eyeliner. Good for beginners of eyeliners. I normally use it to decide where I want to line my eyes before finalising the line in liquid or gel.

Eyeshadow

I’m a sucker for eyeshadows and its pretty palettes. If I could I would have brought all my eyeshadows, but obviously that’s quite impossible. So I picked those that would be versatile for all sorts of situations and those that would come out best in photos or telecast. Here’s the list:

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume 3: A mix of 16 of psychedelic yet wearable colours to match any outfit, how could I not bring this palette along?
Bobbi Brown Denim and Rose Palette: A cool-toned palette that packs everything in one.
Majolica Majorca Trick On Eyeshadow Palette: Used mainly for its Trick-on eyeshadow that’s great for highlighting the brow bone or inner corners of the eyes.
NARS Pandora Eyeshadow Duo: My all time go-to for black eyeshadow. This is THE undisputed best eyeshadow you have to get if you are a fan of black eyeshadow because it’s incredibly highly pigmented and blends well to give the perfect smokey eye.
Dolly Wink Cream Eyeshadow in Crystal: This cream eyeshadow is clear yet uber sparkly thanks to the obscene amount of holographic glitter in it. I love how you can use it all over your lid as a all over base shadow or add a dab of it over your matt eyeshadow for a hint of glitz.
glomineralsEyeshadow Trio in Napoli: Perfect for a soft day look.
Urban Decay Naked Palette: THE coveted brown palette that you can use either for day or night, smokey or natural.
Loreal Open Eyes Pro: Other than using the eyeshadows for day, the darkest colour doubled up as eyebrow powder for me!

To top of all that eye make up and put the finishing touches to striking eyes, a beauty queen must never forget to apply fake eyelashes!

If you’ve lamented about the lack of recent updates, I will not hesitate to point fingers at my very comfortable bed that has held me hostage the past week or so since I came back. But other than that, I wish unpacking was an easy job, unfortunately it’s not. If I may be honest, I still have clothes somewhere in my suitcases strewn across the living room floor. But the easiest and naturally, most obvious items I unpacked first was my makeup and I thought I’d let you have a peek inside the make up case I brought to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Inside My MakeUp Bag

Instead of lugging my original make up case that’s 4kg heavy across oceans and beyond, I narrowed the items down with the help of Mag from makeupstash.com for the specific look I wanted for the Miss Universe 2011 competition.

With 3 check-in luggage and 1 hand-carry, it was close to impossible to bring everything inside my make up bag for make up every day for 26 days. So I took a leaf from the travel make up kit I brought to Hong Kong and packed the essentials in my brand new make up bag given to me by Singapore’s one and only, Sarah of facesbysarah.com

I’ve split the entire stash into 2 parts. The first part focusing on how to get the face of a beauty queen (ie foundation, concealer, blusher and lippies) while the next part will be all about the eyes. So have you ever wondered what goes inside the make up bag of a beauty queen? Well, let’s start unpacking the contents and have a tiny peek.

Like an artist needs a blank canvas to work on, it’s important for any girl who wants to look completely flawless to have a good make up foundation. The most essential make up must have of all the basic make up, make up foundation must match your skin tone and if anything, is one of the hardest things to shop for. Get the wrong type of foundation or a foundation that doesnt match your skin tone and you probably will end up looking like a clown or a geisha.

I’ve been searching for a new foundation for quite some time now since I’ve developed this habit of losing my trusty MAC Studio Fix somewhere in goodness-knows-where. Unlike the rest of the items in my make up case, foundation base is the only thing I dont have duplicates of.

There are several requirements I look out for in a good make up foundation. One, it has to provide excellent coverage, yet, at the same time, this coverage has to be light and not cakey. It is a must for the finished look to be natural. You probably look out for a lot of these things when you pick a foundation on top of wanting your choice of foundation to last throughout your wear.

Lancome Maqui Miracle Foundation

The recently launched Lancome Maqui Miracle foundation does all of that in addition to enhancing skin’s inner radiance through the use of patented pink and blue bioptic pigments. I adored how one application of the silky smooth Lancome Maqui Miracle powder foundation and my usually yellow-toned skin was suddenly brighter and glowy. Instead of the usual yellow/orange tone I normally get from other foundations, through the use of light correction, this foundation manages to bring out a natural pink healthy flush in your skin. It was hard not to admire my newly found smooth and flawless skin in the mirror just that little bit longer.

With the higher UV protection level of SPF 35/PA+++, you can wear the Lancome Maqui Miracle foundation out the entire day without worries. Furthermore, its long-lasting formula will ensure you still look as fresh as a flower by the end of the night. I wore my foundation for a good 8 hours and I still had to take some extra minutes when I returned home to admire myself.

At SGD$65 for a refillable compact, it can be a little steep for the babe on a budget. Add to that a one time purchase of SGD$27 for the case and you might just have to stay home looking yourself in the mirror than into your date’s eyes. But if you have a little extra cash to spare, Lancome’s Maqui Miracle foundation is a mighty fine foundation you can use on its own or layer it over liquid foundation.

Hello Kitty Make Up Collection with Swarovski

I know of some girls who are hardcore Hello Kitty fans. In fact, some of them are personal friends of mine. I’m no die-hard Hello Kitty fan, but I couldnt help but gush over this Swarovski encrusted make up case from the Hello Kitty Glittercute make up collection. I may not be a big fan of Hello Kitty but I sure am a sucker for anything bling. In my books, this sparkling container on its own beats the entire MAC Hello Kitty make up collection hands down.

Hidden within the dazzling Hello Kitty is a set of a set of eight Glittercute Eyeliners and a set of quality makeup brushes with synthetic bristles.

This Hello Kitty Glittercute make up set contains:
- Night Sky – black glitter eyeliner
- Telephone – charcoal glitter eyeliner
- Coin Purse – silver glitter eyeliner
- Teapot – medium brown gold glitter eyeliner
- Hello Sunshine – light gold glitter eyeliner
- Sandbox – dark brown glitter eyeliner
- Grape Soda – purple glitter eyeliner
- Happy Sails – navy glitter eyeliner
- Face Brush
- Eyeshadow Brush
- Shader/Blending Brush
- Angled Eyeliner Brush
- Lip Brush

I’m not too sure this beautiful container can hold everything inside my make up bag or if it’s available in Sephora Singapore, but if you want to get your kitty paws on some Hello Kitty make up, Sephora Singapore is the purr-fect make up store to fulfill all your Hello Kitty fantasies.

Make up foundation is probably one of the most essential make up must haves every girl owns. Whether you use make up daily or indulge in it occasionally, you know foundation base is the most important step in your basic make up routine you cannot do without. It acts as a foundation (literally) for all your other steps and is the primary creator of a flawlessly even face.

Make Up Foundation Base

The key to a flawless face is finding the best foundation for your skin. This quest is a tricky one because first there’s the problem of finding the right type of foundation: Do you pick liquid over mousse or powder above all? Next, there’s the whole issue of finding the best foundation shade that matches both your face and your neck to avoid looking like you’re wearing a mask. If you’re wearing foundation the whole day, you’d also want your foundation base to last the entire day instead of melting before the day is over.

Thus far, I’ve been rather lucky with my make up foundation bases in that they all even out my complexion, but I’ve yet to find the one that I like best and cannot do without. My current favourites are Everyday Minerals’ Base, Anna Sui Moisturising Fluid Foundation and MAC Studio Fix Foundation. I’m definitely looking forward to trying out Aqualabel’s Powder Foundation and the soon to-be-launched Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation!

1. Everyday Minerals Base
2. Lancome Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation
3. ZA 2-way Foundation
4. Aqualabel Powder Foundation Refill
5. Anna Sui Moisturing Fluid Foundation
6. Bobbi Brown Pressed Powder
7. MAC Studio Fix Foundation

For me, a new year usually means new beginnings and trying new things. But if there’s one resolution that I always keep year after year, and it’s the ONLY resolution that I usually make, it is to experience things with an open mind. Now, as simple as it may sound, this “open mind” concept is a difficult one to fully grasp. We go into a new year fresh from leaving past grievances behind and raring to face the new year, but being normal human beings, we quickly fall into old habits. When expectations are not met, we rely on past experiences to make sense of things and sometimes fail to see the new meaning behind a particular situation.

If running this Singapore Beauty Blog has taught me anything, it is that things change and we should ourselves adapt. Very much like our circumstances in life, just on a smaller scale. Beauty trends come and go. Make up tips vary from person to person. Why stick to one method of applying eyeshadow when there are a variety of ways to do it? Since 2011 has come around, I thought instead of doing a normal post on how the year has been for me, I’d try something completely new and do a video log. I mean, it seems like a whole lot of fun and I might as well put the good equipment I have to full use.

Now, I have NEVER had to speak for an extended period of time in front of the camera. At least not without much preparation beforehand. Even though you might think I have had experience prancing in front of the lens, video logs are an entirely new field I’ve not had much time with. I look like I have shifty eyes in the video since I had to think about what to say on the spot. But really, no body stares at the person they’re speaking to without wavering eyes anyway.

The downside of talking impromptu meant that I didnt cover everything that I wanted to. If I did however continue talking about every single thing in 2010, you might be watching a 20 minute video instead of a 4 minute one. Given that I only covered the major highlights for dweam.com in the video, here’s a recap of the other breakthroughs I made in 2010.
