I must thank Kate Cosmetics for initiating me into the whole gel eyeliner phenomenon way back in 2008. It’s been 3 years on and gel eyeliners still rank at the top of my list of eyeliners. However, with the addition of Tokidoki’s Perfetto Eyeliner, the one that I finally found and brought along in my travel make up kit, felt-tip eyeliners are on the climb up as my go-to eyeliner.

The difference between felt-tip eyeliners and gel eyeliners is its precision. Felt-tip eyeliners fall under the category of liquid eyeliners, but the main difference between the two is the stiff brush tip of felt-tip liners. Instead of the soft brush head of conventional liquid eyeliners, felt-tip eyeliners are very much like pens or markers. In fact, they’re even sometimes called felt-tip eyeliner pens thanks to the short stiff tip at the end.

I, thus, found the Kate Eyeliner FR highly intriguing. You know how the one make up tip that pros always give regarding applying eyeliner is to keep the line as close to lashes as possible? Well, the Kate Eyeliner FR lets you get close to your natural lash line and more.

The three pronged tip of the Kate Eyeliner FR is very unique and when I first saw it, I wondered what sort of effect it was designed to give. Turns out instead of needing to draw a continuous line like you normally would with eyeliner, this Kate eyeliner was designed to fill in the spaces between your lashes. It’s as simple dotting the felt-tip pen across your eyelid and making sure the tips of the eyeliner go between your lashes.

Because the eyeliner fills up the spaces between your natural lashes and is very fine, it looks like you have naturally defined eyes thanks to thick lashes, perfect for those who prefer nothing over the top. Furthermore, because the lining effect is so subtle with the Kate Eyeliner FR, if you’re one who always had a problem with drawing bottom eyeliner, you will certainly marvel at your new found skill of perfect eyelining when you dot the eyeliner on your bottom lids.

When the first Sephora Singapore store finally opened in Ngee Ann City Singapore, I’m sure many beauty addicts like me were ecstatic. THE ONE AND ONLY SEPHORA. The one that carries many of the brands we love and lust for: Too Faced, Bare Escentuals, Pop Beauty, Smashbox etc. But what they didnt have were the OTHER brands that we really wanted, brands like Urban Decay and NARS.

The second and much bigger Sephora outlet in ION didn’t manage to bring in these coveted brand either. But now, girls, after months of waiting, it’s time to pop the champagne.

URBAN DECAY IS FINALLY HERE IN SINGAPORE!

A peek at just a few of the items the counter carries.

Mention Urban Decay, and the ever popular Urban Decay Primer Potion comes to mind. Other than the original Primer Potion, two new stunning colours are now available for your picking: Eden, a wearable, tawny, matte shade and Sin, a shimmering champagne colour (all three seen in the picture, extreme left of middle row). Both gorgeous to wear on its own as a cream eyeshadow and of course, for use under your eyeshadows to make them stay longer. I couldn’t decide which of the two to get. I love shimmery shades but at the same time want a matt eyeshadow that’s ever so versatile. Anyone want to buy me them both?

The counter also stocks the to-die for 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils, Heavy Metal Glitter eyeliner and brilliant StarDust eyeshadow which again made my pocket cry out in vain. I poured over the items and couldn’t decide which one to get. Ohhhhh… The joy of shopping for your items and testing out the colours you like. The Oil Slick StarDust eyeshadow had my name written all over it. I couldn’t help but drool over the intense amount of glitter in this pigmented eyeshadow. The Heavy Metal Glitter eyeliner was another one with an obscene amount of glitter in it. Back during my escapade in the Philippines, I was lucky enough to have Miss Northern Ireland lend it to me. I tried it out and ended up looking like I had pretty fairy dust on my lids. Teehee.

If you’re like me and can’t decide what to get, perhaps the 24/7 sets with the 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil and Heavy Metal Glitter eyeliner will be an easy choice for you. The assortment of rainbow colours allow for some dramatic and fun looks. But me being me, I had difficulty picking just ONE set. They were all so pretty. I’m greedy, I WANTED THEM ALL!

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil in Electric

These creamy Glide-on eyeliners literally glide on your skin and stays soft for up to 30 seconds before drying up to a long-lasting finish. They are waterproof and WILL not BUDGE. It took a quite hard rub with my finger before the liner would smudge.

Because it’s the beginning of the month and the paycheck is already in, I think it might just be a good time to hop on down to Sephora right now.

Sephora is located at:
Sephora ION Orchard Shopping Mall
Singapore 238801

Sephora Ngee Ann City

Sephora Great World City

Following in the footsteps of one of the hottest trends for the Autum/Winter 09 season, I decided to try my hand at being vicious, Lid Vicious that is.

After attending the M.A.C Autum/Winter Trend Presentation, I couldnt help but drool over the images and demonstration by Gregory Arlt. I definitely picked up a couple of tips from watching the master at work.

Looking to the runway, here is an example of what it’s like to be Lid Vicious. Various fashion brands including Dsquared2 turned to the dark side for their runway shows.

The girls look like they lived in their makeup overnight! The smokey, smudged effect is something I personally think is wearable on the streets. Very apt when we want to invoke the rock chick in us.

The trick is to line the bottom lids with eyeliner AND then BLEND the line out with a dark eyeshadow in a similar colour.

My take on it.

Face
Rare Minerals SPF 30++ in Medium

Eyes
Kate Gel Eyeliner in Black (must have!)
NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Pandora (shimmer white/matt black) (must have!)
Top lash: Maybelline Define-a-lash mascara
Bottom lash: Maybelline XXL Waterproof mascara
Falsies

Lips
DuWop Lip Venom

My second attempt at underlining my bottom eyelids and hey, I’m liking it! Remember, do keep the rest of the face clean if you’re sporting strong eyes.

We’re taking a break from reviewing mascaras for a bit and moving on to other exciting stuff like GEL EYELINERS! There isnt much of an abundance of gel eyeliners available here in Singapore save for the 2 major makeup brands that I know about. Maybelline just hopped on the bandwagon and introduced their gel eyeliner here, and I couldnt help but feel that it took a stab at the Kate eyeliner packaging and concept by also packing the brush together. Can you believe my incredulity when I saw their gel eyeliner several days after I came back from BKK on a high?

Anyway, the Kate Gel Eyeliner wasnt readily available in Singapore but I still managed to get my hands on it! Ever since my excitement at finding them in MBK Watson, I have been looking for the perfect <strike>excuse</strike> opportunity to open my gel eyeliner and use it. Then came the chance.

Now, remembering that I’ve always been using pencil eyeliners and/or liquid liners, I surmised gel eyeliners to be the in-between. If I could “rank” them, I’d say that pencil eyeliners are for beginners because you can draw lightly (ie. sketch) before deciding to apply more pressure to your desired line, while liquid liners should be handled by users who generally have better control over their brush/tool. Thus, gel eyeliners are for people like me who arent exactly new to eyelining, yet arent as skilled and still sometimes make mistakes when it comes to drawing the perfect line.

I judged the gel eyeliner on its ease of application and it’s staying power. My problem with pencil liners was that it would transfer to my upper eyelids owing to my naturally oily eyelids AND hidden double eyelids, thus leaving me at the end of the the day with well, hardly any eyeliner left.

Kate Gel Eyeliner’s staying power, despite also having this transfer problem, was very much bearable as compared to using a pencil. At the end of a long day, the line was still visible, though not that much fainter, and someone most likely would still be able to notice that you took the trouble to line your eyes.

Ease of application was such a breeze. Just dip the accompanying brush into the pot, brush out a little bit of eyeliner, touch the brush head to your lids, draw and go. The line was precise, consistent and there was no worry about dragging/pulling your eyelids. You know what they say about applying too much mechanical stress to your delicate eye area. It takes me about 2 minutes to draw both my eyes and this amount of time I can afford when in a hurry to get to work early wanting to beat the morning peak period traffic. If you have the extra time, wiggle on some mascara and your eyes are pretty much dressed up for a casual day at work.

For gel eyeliner noobs like me, you may want to consider this gel eyeliner if you’re graduating from your pencil liner. It definitely helps that the brush is a square flat brush instead of them long skinny types. Say hello to eyelined eyes from now on.
