Face of the Day - Smells Like Teen Spirit

10 years ago, walking out those gates, I was a bespectacled teenager with absolutely no inkling of makeup whatsoever. 10 years later, I walk back into the very same hall I collected my ‘O’ Level results, a different person. So different not just in terms of make up, but with a different swagga all together. I was remembered by my teachers as a “quiet, reserved girl”.

Because my school colours are green and yellow, in honour of the 10th year reunion, I was all decked out in the colours of my alma mater. A sparkling combination, I must say.

I’ve probably never actually told you before how much I love being a girl. I mean, what’s there not to like? If I werent a girl, I probably never get to indulge myself silly in all that makeup that’s inside my make up case. And when it comes to clothes or shoes, you can own 21 tops, 407 bottoms, 1695 accessories and 36790 pairs of shoes and never feel guilty about it because, well, you’re a girl. Men complain about the lack of dress up choices when it comes to events.

Other than the obvious physical differences between males and females, there is one other thing that sets us apart from the boys: the fact that our bodies change every month. You’re probably all too aware of the symptoms of your body just before your period comes. But change is the only constant and every change is a new beginning. So, let me just illustrate some of the good things that come exclusively from being a girl because knowledge is sexy.

Chocolate

Menstruation, Days 1 to 7 of the cycle
The first day of your period is counted as day 1. During days 1 to 7 your cycle, you may experience chocolate cravings and can feel low in energy. Instead of resisting that luscious bar of dark velvety chocolate, go ahead and indulge. Because your body metabolises carbs most efficiently during the first and second day of menstruation, you dont have to worry about that delicious dessert tipping the scales. At the same time, when your body metabolises this chocolate, it can help increase levels of serotonin, the ‘happy hormone’!

I know we complain about the hassle of getting our periods, but this is the best time to impress your man thanks to the decreased levels of both female hormones: oestrogen and progesterone. Less prone to jealousy, encourage your man to spend time with his bros one night and then plan a date the next night where you drive. Thanks to days 1-7 of your cycle you get enhanced parking skills with your heightened spatial awareness!

Pre-ovulation, Days 8 to 14 of the cycle
If you think your body is done after menstruation, think again. The pre-ovulation stages are the best part of being a girl! Where do we start? During this time, oestrogen levels increase and you’ll probably feel a lot flirtier and cheekier on top of having better hair days. With increased memory and heightened verbal fluency skills, this might just be the time for you to ace that interview or presentation you’ve been dreading. If you work in teams, improved mood levels, being less aggressive and being more creative will for sure help you score extra points with your team mates! So schedule all your team meetings during this stage of your cycle.

Post-ovulation, Days 15 to 21 of the cycle
On week 3 after your period, classic symptoms of PMS start to show: mood swings, irritability and fluid retention are probably all too familiar to most of us. But instead of agonizing over them, cut down on salty foods and coffee to help combat fluid retention. Drinking lots of water and going for a good workout can also help you stay fresh during PMS. A solid sleep at night definitely always keeps me energetic throughout the day. With Whisper Super Long Overnights’ revolutionary 3D Absorbent Core which prevents fluid running along your skin, no matter how you move during sleep, you are assured peaceful, comfortable, worry-free sleep.

Pre-Menstrual, Days 22 to 28 of the cycle
Just before your period your body prepares for the coming 5 days of menstruation. It gives you warning signs and signals. Although you experience the usual PMS and other bodily changes like greasier hair, there is a quick and easy beauty tip to get rid of oily hair in an instant. One plus side I particularly love during the pre-menstural stages is a lower sensitivity to pain during this time. It’s the perfect timing to make an appointment for waxing or eye-brow threading.

Despite disturbed sleep at night, having a long hot bath just before bed-time will help you relax and sleep well through the night. In addition, Whisper Super Long Overnights also give you added protection throughout the night thanks to its super 1 second absorbency material. It can absorb 10 times average flow letting you feel long lasting dryness throughout the night.

As mentioned previously in the tips for better sleep, make sure your bedroom should be cool, dark and quiet. A good night’s sleep should help combat daytime sleepiness too. Once your body is all prepared for menstruation, it’s back to day 1 of the cycle and you get to enjoy the benefits of being a woman all over again.

If you have been following my tweets, you’ll probably already know that I had a blast in Hong Kong. The first time I went there last August, my travel companion and I were absolute greenhorns in navigating the crowded streets of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong

Going back a second time, I was more familiar with the ins and outs of the bustling city but wasnt completely at home in the shopping districts. Thank goodness then, for my new travel mates who knew where the best bargains where. I had a chance on these two different trips to take a look at the fashion and style of Hong Kong city and I can see why those who’ve already been to Hong Kong go crazy shopping there.

Taking a pointer or two from my travel beauty tips to keep myself fresh despite an early flight, I managed to pull together a look on the first night in Hong Kong using what little I brought in my travel make up kit coupled with accessories from the various shopping markets.

Beauty queens always get us talking. Whether for their beauty, brains or breasts body, no one can resist talking about them. I dont know about you, but watching these girls on TV or seeing them in person, I sometimes wonder, is such beauty is born or bred?

Having been through Miss Earth 2009 and then witnessing the recent Miss Earth 2010, these gatherings of gorgeous ladies never fail to make me feel inferior. Seriously, how can such beauty be allowed to exist? There must be something that makes them shine.

Despite breathing the same air as these beautiful women, it doesnt seem as though I’ve inherited any of their good genes. I swear, they probably have access to some incredible beauty tips and secrets. Indeed, some of this ethereal beauty boils right down to being born with good genes but the rest of it, well, let’s just say everyone, including beauty queens, could all use some help here and there. So if I may, let me share some beauty queen tips and secrets never previously revealed before.

1. Do your own make up
Just like the photoshoot tips from previously, it’s best to have your own set of basic make up and brushes with you at all times. Instead of waiting around for an available artist to do your make up, you’ll be able to do up your own face and be camera-ready every single moment.

2. Luscious locks
A full head of long, smooth and silky hair is associated with grace, femininity and believe it or not, good health. But when you’re on stage, curls or a classy updo always help to add volume to your hair and make you stand out. Take care of your locks by conditioning them and using serum for that added shine. If you cant get enough volume normally, you can always get help with extensions or fake hair pieces.

3. A winning gown
It’s important to get a gown that accentuates your figure in all the right places. You want your dress to compliment and flaunt your best asset instead of hiding it. If you’ve got good shoulders and a smooth back, choose something backless. If you’re well-endowed in the chest department, a plunging neckline is sure to raise some temperatures. Long legged girls will opt for a dress with a high slit to make those long gams look longer. On top of choosing the perfect dress for your best asset, make sure it has some bling detail on it. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!

4. Brilliant smile
Smile, and the whole world smiles with you. In a pageant this statement might hold truest. You hardly see beauty queens with a frown on their faces. They’re looking for a beauty queen, not an ice queen. Those pearlie whites are meant to dazzle and stun you. Whitening toothpaste or bleaching strips are easily available over the counter in any drugstore. Alternatively, if you prefer a more natural way of whitening your teeth, look no further than strawberries.

5. Silicon inserts
These come in two types: the permanent ones and the non-permanent types. Short of permanently implanting them under your skin, chicken fillets, as they are affectionately called, are a great and painless way to give you an added lift where you need them. And yes, you can use them under your skimpy little bikinis too.

Fake Nails

6. Well-groomed nails
If you’re like me and cant keep your manicure on for more than a week, fake nails are the way to go. Some girls opt for a gel nail manicure, but these grow out and it may be difficult to find a place to do infills or touchups during the entire duration of the pageant. Opting to do your own glitter nails might tide you through to competition night. But applying fake nails just before competition day will ensure that you have a “fresh” manicure on stage.

7. Get a tan
Although the sun’s UV rays are harmful to our skin, getting a tan actually makes you look slimmer and toner on stage. Flaws are naturally hidden behind your sun kissed skin and you’ll sport a healthy glow instead of looking like a vampire. Wanna know the real secret to getting tan without those harmful rays? Self-tan in a bottle.

8. 4 inches no less
Beauty queens are hardly ever seen without their heels. In fact, sometimes you think they were born in them. When it comes to heels, we all know they elongate your legs, correct your posture and create a sexy silhouette. But for truly maximum effect, I say go AT LEAST 4 inches with your heels. No less. When the time calls for you to be outstanding, them 4 inch babies will serve you well. Whether you’re sitting or standing, legs that go on forever and stop people in their tracks is what you get. They dont call them killer stilettos for nothing.

Call it beauty cheating or just being very hard-working, being beautiful is no mean feat. Making the effort to take care of yourself shouldnt be frowned upon, in fact, I think it’s an art. A skillful art which is perfect over time and through lots of practise. Now that you know the tips and secrets of beauty queens, pick one beauty tip and try one on yourself. Although not everyone can be a beauty queen, everyone can be beautiful.

For me, a new year usually means new beginnings and trying new things. But if there’s one resolution that I always keep year after year, and it’s the ONLY resolution that I usually make, it is to experience things with an open mind. Now, as simple as it may sound, this “open mind” concept is a difficult one to fully grasp. We go into a new year fresh from leaving past grievances behind and raring to face the new year, but being normal human beings, we quickly fall into old habits. When expectations are not met, we rely on past experiences to make sense of things and sometimes fail to see the new meaning behind a particular situation.

If running this Singapore Beauty Blog has taught me anything, it is that things change and we should ourselves adapt. Very much like our circumstances in life, just on a smaller scale. Beauty trends come and go. Make up tips vary from person to person. Why stick to one method of applying eyeshadow when there are a variety of ways to do it? Since 2011 has come around, I thought instead of doing a normal post on how the year has been for me, I’d try something completely new and do a video log. I mean, it seems like a whole lot of fun and I might as well put the good equipment I have to full use.

Now, I have NEVER had to speak for an extended period of time in front of the camera. At least not without much preparation beforehand. Even though you might think I have had experience prancing in front of the lens, video logs are an entirely new field I’ve not had much time with. I look like I have shifty eyes in the video since I had to think about what to say on the spot. But really, no body stares at the person they’re speaking to without wavering eyes anyway.

The downside of talking impromptu meant that I didnt cover everything that I wanted to. If I did however continue talking about every single thing in 2010, you might be watching a 20 minute video instead of a 4 minute one. Given that I only covered the major highlights for dweam.com in the video, here’s a recap of the other breakthroughs I made in 2010.
