Archive for February, 2011

The Body Shop has always been committed to social causes. Largely known for its eco-friendly and anti-animal testing philosophies, its latest offering Brush with Fashion is no different. A collaboration between The Body Shop and the London College of Fashion, an institution that shares similar values and beliefs as The Body Shop, this cruelty-free make up range is set to rock Spring 2011 with it trendy packaging and wearable colours.

The Body Shop Brush with Fashion

I was excited to see Brush with Fashion already out in all The Body Shop Singapore stores. The bright colours and graphic packaging is quite different from The Body Shop’s usual range of products. I know I shouldn’t be buying any more make up, but I’d say keep your eyes peeled for the Limited Edition Brush With Fashion Mini Brush Kit (SGD$28.90).

The Body Shop Brush with Fashion Brush Set

If you haven’t already gotten a basic make up brush set, this mini kit contains four basic must have make up brushes. I’ve always lamented about the difficulty of carrying my full-sized brushes when I travel. Featuring a limited-edition designed pouch by fashion-illustration student Katarina Voloder from the London College of Fashion, the limited edition Brush with Fashion mini blusher brush, eyeshadow blender brush, slanted brush, lipstick/concealer brush is loving cradled in a trendy pouch and might just be my answer for all my travel getaways.

Make up foundation is probably one of the most essential make up must haves every girl owns. Whether you use make up daily or indulge in it occasionally, you know foundation base is the most important step in your basic make up routine you cannot do without. It acts as a foundation (literally) for all your other steps and is the primary creator of a flawlessly even face.

Make Up Foundation Base

The key to a flawless face is finding the best foundation for your skin. This quest is a tricky one because first there’s the problem of finding the right type of foundation: Do you pick liquid over mousse or powder above all? Next, there’s the whole issue of finding the best foundation shade that matches both your face and your neck to avoid looking like you’re wearing a mask. If you’re wearing foundation the whole day, you’d also want your foundation base to last the entire day instead of melting before the day is over.

Thus far, I’ve been rather lucky with my make up foundation bases in that they all even out my complexion, but I’ve yet to find the one that I like best and cannot do without. My current favourites are Everyday Minerals’ Base, Anna Sui Moisturising Fluid Foundation and MAC Studio Fix Foundation. I’m definitely looking forward to trying out Aqualabel’s Powder Foundation and the soon to-be-launched Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation!

2. Lancome Maqui Miracle Natural Brightening Creator Compact Foundation
3. ZA 2-way Foundation
4. Aqualabel Powder Foundation Refill
5. Anna Sui Moisturing Fluid Foundation
6. Bobbi Brown Pressed Powder
7. MAC Studio Fix Foundation

Sponsored Review

This is probably the millionth and one time I’m going to tell you about the importance of using sunblock to protect your skin from sun damage. Today, however, we’re going into the specifics. Sun damage changes the cells under your skin and essentially directly causes melanin production. Take a look at your skin. See your skin tone? Everyone has pigments in their skin called melanin. It’s what gives our skin its natural colour. The darker you are, the more melanin pigments you have. Fairer skinned people, conversely, have lesser melanin.

It’s common knowledge that under the sun’s rays we get tanner. But why? The answer is precisely the reason I nag so often about sunblock. When UV rays fall on our skin, our skin’s natural defense mechanism kick starts. Melanin offers our skin some protection from the sun and is produced by cells called melanocytes. Thus, in response to sun exposure, the melanocytes increase their production of melanin turning us a shade darker. But there is a limit to how much melanin can shield us from the sun’s UV. Under prolonged unprotected sun exposure, it can leave us with freckles and a dull skin tone.

Olay White Radiance

Prevention is therefore, always better than cure. Going right back to where it all begins, to an early-step cell care approach is what Olay scientists have done with the new Olay White Radiance whitening category. Early-step cell care* treats the cell as a whole to make each cell look, act and behave better, thereby acting on melanin formation and transfer more effectively. The end result is a fine porcelain fairness from deep within your skin*.

Taking inspiration from the desired end-benefit of cosmetic whitening treatments – such as whitening injections, micro-dermabrasions and chemical peels**, they’ve created an Olay whitening formula that works at a deeper level of the skin epidermis where these cosmetic treatments can’t; the Olay White Radiance range works at the cellular level*.

Olay White Radiance

The new and improved CelLucent™ Complex gives you radiant white fairness without resorting to harmful bleaches**. Olay CelLucent™ Complex contains a newly developed ingredient and the well-established Niacinamide.

Each single drop of Olay White Radiance CelLucent™ White Essence works at both first and later stages of melanin production*. First, it temporarily acts on the receptor on the melanocyte, thereby stopping the melanocyte from producing melanin. Next, the new and improved CelLucent™ Complex works at a later stage to prevent the transfer of melanin from the melanocytes into the skin surface. By targeting both the early and later stages of the melanin cycle, Olay White Radiance CelLucent™ White Essence reduces the amount of melanin production, eventually giving you the luminous fairness you desire.

Olay White Radiance Review

The Olay White Radiance CelLucent™ White Essence is a light fluid milky essence that absorbs quickly into the skin upon application. It leaves no sticky residue and smells lovely. Applied after the cleansing step of your basic skin care routine, the essence provides whitening, hydration, and translucency for luminous fairness. Hooray for non-invasive methods of whitening**!

*Refers to epidermal layer only
**Results not equal to whitening treatments. When used regularly and continuously.

When the glamourous SuperKawaiiMama was in town over the Chinese New Year period, I had the honour of learning how to do vintage make up from her in a one-on-one tutorial session. Who else would I glean vintage make up tips from but the vintage expert herself.

Vintage Make Up Tutorial

Initially, I thought learning how to do vintage make up was going to be tough because, as you can see from the above picture, we both have very different styles. The emphasis of my make up style generally focuses on the eyes. Primarily with the aim of creating a deep-set or smokey effect. SuperKawaiiMama‘s vintage style, however, does the opposite, throwing the spotlight on matte red lips and clean but well-defined eyes.

Before watching the vintage make up tutorial video, on a completely unrelated note, I’d just to point out that the above photo is probably the last time in this post you’ll see me looking like “me”. Haha. Now that you’ve heard that life-changing observation, it’s time to learn how to get the vintage look in this vintage make up tutorial with the brilliant SuperKawaiiMama.

In truth, the vintage make up look is not hard to do. To fully recreate the vintage style, there are some key elements you will need to have. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to try a new make up style for Valentine’s Day, keep these vintage make up tips in mind when you’re doing your vintage make up look:

Vintage Makeup

- Everything about the vintage look is matte. Sparkles, shimmer, glitter or anything shiny for that matter, was not part of that era.
- Use loose powder over your foundation for a flawless, shine-free complexion.
- Eyeliner only goes on the upper eyelids and never on the bottom.
- The winged/cat-eye eyeliner should follow your natural lash line and is a smooth curve. It should not look like a tick/check.
- Well-drawn and slightly arched eyebrows are an important part of vintage style.
- We used a dark pink blush to recreate a bright flush only on the apples of the cheeks.
- The bow of the lips is always well-defined in the vintage make up look.
- The bottom lip is drawn to look very full and luscious.

Vintage Make Up Style

Having already learnt how to work the vintage make up look, I thought hair was going to be another challenge. But surprise surprise, it took less than 5 minutes to get this hair up! I’m saving the hair tutorial, however, till after I’ve perfected drawing my eyebrows. ;)
