Health, in 1948, was defined by the World Health Assembly as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
To me, with the stressors we face nowadays, we should definitely take a more holistic approach to health than we did previously. Health is now, more than ever, viewed as being in a positive state of physical, mental and social well-being.
Previously, infectious diseases from microorganisms, were the main bane of human society. Though they still contribute to a significant number of illnesses these days, we as a human species have evolved to be susceptible to dietary diseases and mental illnesses. There are certain individuals, in my opinion, that thus embody and present health in today’s modern context.
With our packed schedules, many of us forget to eat right. Fast, “delish” but calorie packed junk food is more than easily available on the go. I have to sadly admit that I used to be guilty of this crime but have thankfully stopped. Think about what that could do for our bodies in the long run?! The state of malnutrition certainly doesn’t cross our mind with food readily available and poverty not an issue in our society, but did you know that the extreme lack of Vitamin B can cause beriberi and insufficient Vitamin C in our diet leads to scurvy?
Enter: A dietitian
A dietitian will customise your nutritional needs according to health. He/she will assess the nutritional well-being of patients to customise their medical nutrition therapy and implement specific diet strategies. But their knowledge is not limited to medical settings; their expertise can be used in community settings, like weight management, food services, eating disorders or even sportsmen!
A dietitian will layout an adequate individualised nutritional care plan and will encourage you to…..

But what about people who have difficulty performing day-to-day tasks and hence cannot feed themselves? You’d be surprised at the number of people who need such help. In my line of work, I sometimes see kids who need such assistance. Their productive living may be compromised due to such a setback, but fear not, their physical and social health can be helped by…
Enter: An occupational therapist
An occupational therapist will design treatment programme for those with physical disabilities, mental or social problems. Despite accidents, illness or aging, they can enhance physical and psychological functions, facilitate independent living and improve the quality of life of people with disabilities or special needs through their meaningful line of work.

Another important facet of the healthcare line is the wonderful team of nurses:
Staff nurse, nurse manager, nurse educator and advanced practice nurse.
Without them, patients would not get due care during their treatments, acute and/or chronic illnesses would go undiagnosed, untreated and unmanaged, their clinical expertise would not be passed down to future generations and on top of all that, they also work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals!

After all that talk, it’s now your turn to demonstrate what health is to you. Do you have a brilliant idea on how else health can look like besides these everyday people with extraordinary lives?
